What is it?
With Beamer Boxing, you can learn to box and also get a good workout. With Beamer Boxing, you can independently follow a training session with a digital trainer whenever you want. You can immediately put your techniques into practice by following the instructions and punching the trainer’s pads (the projection on the white mat). There are also fun exercises for all ages that combine boxing and gaming. Beamer Boxing also offers special options for people with disabilities, such as those with Parkinson’s.
How does it work?
The image of a coach or a game is projected onto a specially designed boxing mat. The short-throw projector ensures that you don’t see any shadows on the mat while you’re boxing. You can punch the mat with full force, but just like with a physical opponent, it’s all about speed, power, and precision. The mat smooths out immediately after the punch, revealing a nice, clean projection. The digital coach can be heard through a speaker and provides instructions or audio cues. It’s remarkable how quickly a digital coach becomes “real” for the user, who quickly becomes engrossed in the training.
Beamer Boxing is a registered trademark of HIA3D BV. It was created during the 2020 Covid lockdown to enable Mesa Sport Rotterdam’s competitive boxers to train physically against a (digital) opponent, in accordance with Covid regulations (1.5 meters of social distancing). At implementation/testing partner Mesa Sport Rotterdam, Beamer Boxing is now part of the training program for all ages, including people with disabilities such as Parkinson’s.
